Moderate alterations to corporate design standards enabled the Hillsboro, Oregon Starbucks store to earn a LEED for Commercial Interiors Gold certification. While most of the company's stores use energy-efficient lighting and cabinets with 90 percent post-industrial recycled content, the Hillsboro store contains additional recycled materials and increased energy-efficiency measures. Because Starbucks recognizes the competitive advantage of high-performance operations, the store also served as part of the collaboration with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to create a LEED rating process targeting retail properties. Key features of this project include: - Recycled-content building materials - Water-efficient fixtures - Energy-efficient lighting - Extensive daylighting - Consumer education - Construction waste recycling
